I knew that I wanted to become an artist at the age of four. I learned to draw before I started school, confounded the expectations of my working class roots by going to art school, and went on to exhibit my work internationally. As an artist I have worked in collaboration with musicians, performers, and writers ranging from Tony Benn to Thurston Moore. I can't help experimenting - always looking for new ways to explore the human condition through words, sounds, objects, and images. I have lived and worked in numerous countries, and my journey recently led me to the life changing experience of working with prisoners in some of Her Majesty’s UK jails. My book, The Art of Crime: Diary of a Prison Art Tutor, published by Mirror Books 2022, is an account of the three years I spent discovering the transformative power of art inside prison walls.
